At an early Saturday session of WonderCon, AMC’s Into the Badlands premiered their trailer for season 3 of the hit show. According to reports from Deadline, the series panel included stars Daniel Wu, Lorraine Toussaint, and Nick Frost. Showrunner Alfred Gough contributed to the discussion on the upcoming season.
Kicking off with the trailer, moderator Jeff Yang chatted with the guests about the unique world portrayed in the series and their often over-the-top action sequences. The over-arching message of the discussion though was inclusion and diversity of the show.
With an Asian-American star and women in prominent roles, these moves were very intentional. The martial-arts theme tells the story of the characters but also highlights the equal ground found by those trained in the art. According to Gough, “The future isn’t gonna be full of white people…says the only white guy on the panel.”
Star Lorraine Toussaint was impressed with the vision Gough had for casting the show. When she question how he would execute it, his reply was, “You just have to do it.”
In the upcoming season, Sunny (Wu) is working to protect his son while remaining off the radar. Unfortunately the little guy comes down with an illness that forces Sunny back into the Badlands. The Widow (Emily Beecham) and Baron Chau (Eleanor Matsurra) are embattled in a war through the land while there’s a new cult gang wreaking havoc.
Season 3 of Into the Badlands premieres April 22 on AMC.
