After a well-received first season, AMC is officially renewing The Son for a second season. Deadline reported on Friday that the network is going forward with the Texas-based Western series.
Based on the New York Times bestseller by Philipp Meyer, the original book was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Filmed in Austin, Texas, The Son follows the McCullough family, who have lived in the same ranch for 150 years. The main character is patriarch Eli McCullough (Brosnan) who at the age of twelve watched a group of Comanche invade his Texas homestead and brutally murder both his mother and sister, and then took him as a captive. Despite their torture and cruelty, Eli learned their ways and their language, even taking on the new name of ‘Tiehteti Taiboo’ aka ‘Pathetic, White Boy’. He becomes the adopted ‘son’ of the chief, fighting with the Comanche against both Indians and white men. But when disease, starvation, and westward expansion finally decimate the Comanche, Eli is left alone in a world where he is neither white, nor Native American. Eli has a family including a son named Pete, played by Henry Garrett (Beauty and the Beast, Poldark). The cast also includes Zahn McClarnon, Jess Weixler, Paola Nunez, Elizabeth Frances, and Sydney Lucas.
Meyer co-wrote the series and exec produces along with co-writers Lee Shipman, Brian McGreevy and showrunner Kevin Murphy. Mad Hatter Productions, the production company behind the How to Train Your Dragon series, is also producing the series.
Charlie Collier, President of AMC, SundanceTV and AMC Studios, said the following about the series renewal:
‘The Son’ proudly continues our Westerns tradition at AMC, including ‘Broken Trail’, ‘Hell on Wheels’ and decades of films from ‘The Duke’, ‘Clint’ and so many more. We are so pleased to add to that list another season of our original, multi-generational drama from Philipp Meyer, Kevin Murphy and a remarkable cast led by the incomparable Pierce Brosnan. It’s our longstanding mission to super-serve Westerns fans on weekends and we look forward to continuing this epic next year. Welcome home, Son.
After 30 years not starring in a recurring role, Brosnan is incredibly happy about the continuance of the series, saying:
I am over the moon happy to be back in the saddle as Colonel Eli McCullough for season two of The Son and to stand shoulder-to-shoulder alongside our incredible cast of actors, writers, directors and our amazing crew in the heart of Austin, Texas. And above all else to our ever-growing fan base, I extend my heartfelt thanks for your support.
Brosnan can next be seen in The Only Living Boy in New York, alongside Kate Beckinsale, Jeff Bridges, and Callum Turner, in The Foreigner with Jackie Chan. He will also be portraying King Louis XIV in The King’s Daughter.
