According to The Hollywood Reporter, AMC has just decided to cancel the science-fiction romance anthology series, Soulmates after just one season. The decision to cancel Soulmates comes over two years after AMC announced that they would be renewing the series in August of 2020, two months before the show’s debut in October of that same year.
As written by The Hollywood Reporter, discussions surrounding Soulmates‘ cancellation were quietly finalized sometime last year and stemmed from a multitude of factors, though the final nail in the coffin seemed to be the show’s low ratings, with the six-episode first season averaging just under 200,000 viewers during its linear run on AMC. Other sources claim that scheduling conflicts with Soulmates co-creator and Emmy-winner Brett Goldstein (Ted Lasso, Shrinking) played a large part in the final decision to peddle back on plans for a season two.
When asked about the show’s cancellation, Dan Dermott, President of Original Programming for AMC Networks’ Entertainment Group and co-President of AMC Studios, responded, “We were immediately drawn to the unique premise of Soulmates as it explores love and relationships from several touchpoints in a way that naturally feeds the zeitgeist, prompting conversations around human connection, relationships and happiness. These are stories and themes that resonate and feel almost timely given today’s climate in which so many of us feel disconnected or are coping with shifting relationship dynamics. We’re thrilled to continue our relationship with Will and Brett who never fail to deliver the very best in high-caliber, imaginative storytelling.”
For those unaware, Soulmates is a science-fiction anthology series set fifteen years in the near future which tells the stories of the men and women who become entangled with Soul Connex, a company which has developed a test that can determine the person you are meant to love with 100% perfect accuracy. The series includes the acting talents of stars such as Kingsley Ben-Adir (Vera, One Night in Miami…), Bill Skarsgård (the IT duology, Barbarian), and Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things, The New Mutants).
