According to Deadline, Arsher Ali (Funny Woman, The Fear Index) will officially be a main cast member in Prime Video’s We Were Liars. The series is an adaptation of E. Lockhart’s (The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks, The Boyfriend List) young adult novel of the same name, which has sold almost three million copies worldwide. Universal Television and Amazon MGM Studios are credited as the show’s production companies.
As reported by Deadline, Ali is the newest member of the cast, alongside Mamie Gummer (The Lifeguard, Ricki and the Flash) as Carrie, Caitlin FitzGerald (The Trial of the Chicago 7, Masters of Sex) as Penny, Candice King (The Vampire Diaries, Juno) as Bess and David Morse (The Green Mile, The Hurt Locker) as Harris, all previously announced.
The Amazon series combines elements of a tragic romance with a thriller narrative involving amnesia. The story takes place on an island located near Massachusetts, invoking an atmosphere of isolation. This island is owned by the wealthy Sinclair family, who appear perfect on the surface but hide haunting issues and secrets beneath this facade, as the show will gradually reveal. The Sinclair family spends their summers on this exclusive island. Gummer, FitzGerald and King are cast as the three sisters in the Sinclair family
Ali will portray a Brooklyn art gallery owner named Ed, a figure of charisma and dry humor. Ed spends his summers with his girlfriend of nearly ten years, Carrie, on her family’s island. Throughout their relationship, Ed has been trying to win the approval of Carrie’s father, Harris. Despite his efforts, he has had to tolerate condescending behavior from him that is barely disguised. This summer, however, Ed finds it especially challenging to remain silent against Harris’ arrogance.
Deadline provides information about the key people involved in the production of the series and their roles. Julie Plec (The Vampire Diaries, The Originals) and Carina Adly MacKenzie (Roswell, New Mexico, The Originals) are responsible for executive producing the series and also serve as writers, with Plec having written the first episode while MacKenzie the second episode. Other executive producers are Emily Cummins (Vampire Academy, The Endgame), representing My So-Called Company, and Lockhart, the author of the novel the series is based on. Finally, Nzingha Stewart (Tall Girl, Daisy Jones & The Six) will be the director of the first episode of the show.
