Amazon recently announced that they are renewing the futuristic drama The Peripheral for a second season, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The show was created by Scott B. Smith (The Burnt Orange Heresy, Siberia) and is based on the novel by William Gibson (Mona Lisa Overdrive, The Difference Engine).
The show premiered its first two episodes of the first season in October with the last episode coming out at the beginning of December. The Peripheral managed to catch a spot in Neilsen’s top ten streaming chart during the week of the season finale. 394 million minutes of watching managed to get the show in the eighth position among original series ranking.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Peripheral is the first TV series that Westworld creators Lisa Joy (Reminiscence, Fallout) and Jonah Nolan (Person of Interest, Fallout) developed for Amazon after the overall deal the couple signed in 2019. The married duo is also working on the adaptation of the popular video game Fallout.
The Peripheral takes place in the rural American South in the not-so-distant future. It follows Flynne Fisher played by Chloë Grace Moretz (If I Stay, The 5th Wave) who discovers a secret connection to a virtual reality set in futuristic London. She soon realizes that it isn’t virtual at all, it is actually real. This is the start of the dangerous journey Flynne must make as she tries to discover how to protect her own reality from the dangerous forces at play in futuristic London.
Other cast members of the show include Garry Carr (Trigonometry, The Deuce) as Wilf Netherton; Jack Reynor (Midsommar, Strange Angel) as Burton Fisher, Flynne’s brother; JJ Field (Lost in Space, New Amsterdam) as Lev Zubov; T’Nia Miller (La Fortuna, The Haunting of Bly Manor) as Cherise Nuland; Louis Herthum (Home Before Dark, All Rise) as Corbell Pickett; and Melinda Page Hamilton (Messiah, Damnation) as Ella Fisher. The series is executive produced by Smith, Vincenzo Natali (Cube, Come True), Nolan, Joy, Greg Plageman (Person of Interest, Cold Case), Steven Hoban (Incarnate, Darknet), and Athena Wickman (Westworld, Reminiscence) for Kilter Films.
Season two of The Peripheral is still in pre-production and no release date has been revealed. Season one of the show is available to stream on Amazon Prime.
