Amazon Will Be Shutting Down Freevee Streaming Service

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon Freevee’s free ad-supported streaming service will be phased out over the coming weeks as the service shuts down. Freevee will still be available at no charge for users who don’t subscribe to Prime Video. This new update will be deployed in different territories where Freevee is currently available. These territories include the U.S., UK, Germany and Austria.

“We have built Prime Video into a first-stop entertainment destination where customers can personalize their viewing experience by streaming exclusive Prime member entertainment produced by Amazon MGM Studios, licensed movies and series, content from other services as an add-on subscription, live sports, blockbuster movies and series to rent or buy, FAST Channels and the complete Amazon Freevee content offering,” an Amazon spokesperson said. “To deliver a simpler viewing experience for customers, we have decided to phase out Freevee branding. There will be no change to the content available for Prime members, and a vast offering of free streaming content will still be accessible for non-Prime members, including select Originals from Amazon MGM Studios, a variety of licensed movies and series, and a broad library of FAST Channels – all available on Prime Video.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Freevee began as IMDb TV and changed its name in April 2022. After Prime Video launched an ad tier in January, which had previously been an ad-free SVOD platform, Freevee slowly became obsolete. Prime Video users now have to pay an additional $3 monthly to go ad-free.

Amazon Freevee was the home of such originals as Jury Duty, Bosch: Legacy, Judy Justice, Timewasters, You’re Not a Monster, Alex Rider, Monumental: Ellie Goulding at Kew Gardens, Post Malone: Runaway and many others. It also streamed many Amazon originals, such as A League of Their Own and The Wheel of Time.
