Stieg Larsson’s (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played With Fire) original The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo will be adapted into its own Amazon series, according to Variety. While the developing series and books/film bare the sane title, the new show will not be a continuation or sequel of the books or the films they were adapted.
Instead, the Amazon series will concentrate on the life of Lisabeth Salander, the protagonist from the original Millennium book series. Salander will be placed in today’s world instead of 1966 with a varying setting, new characters and a new plot.
Though no writers or lead actress is currently attached to the series, Salander has been played by multiple actresses onscreen in the past. According to Variety, Salander was played by Noomi Rapace (What Happened to Monday, Prometheus) as an adult in the first three books of the series: The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets. Tehilia Blad (Beyond, Victoria) played her as a child and Rooney Mara (Mary Magdalene, Her) starred as Salander in the 2011 American adaption of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Claire Foy (The Crown, Season of the Witch) also played the protagonist in the 2018 film adaptation of The Girl in the Spider’s Web.
Amazon Studios and Left Bank Pictures will produce the project in association with Sony Pictures Television. Executive producers on the project will include CEO of Left Bank Pictures, Andy Harries (The Queen, All in Good Time), and Rob Bullock (The Night Manager, Monarch of the Glen), Variety claims.
Larsson completed the first three books of the Millennium series before he died in November of 2004. David Lagercrantz (I am Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Fall of Man in Wilmslow) took over the writing for the beloved series, publishing The Girl in the Spider’s Web, The Girl Who Takes and Eye for an Eye, and The Girl Who Lived Twice. The bestselling series has sold over 100 million copies combined worldwide.
There are currently no details regarding possible talents on the new show, when it is expected to stream, nor others that will be included on the production team of the project.
