In September of last year, a Blade Runner series was confirmed to be in production at Amazon Studios. According to Deadline, the series, developed by Ridley Scott (Alien, Gladiator), has been pushed back until 2024 amid the ongoing writer’s strike.
The series, titled Blade Runner 2099, was set to film at Northern Ireland’s Belfast Harbour Studios. The series was set to be executive produced by Ridley Scott, the director of the original 1982 Blade Runner. The series is also set to be written and executive produced by Silka Louisa (Shining Girls, Halo). Blade Runner 2099 comes from Alcon Entertainment in association with Scott Free Productions and Amazon Studios.
The original Blade Runner starred Harrison Ford (Indiana Jones, Star Wars) as Deckard Cain, the titular blade runner, a retired cop sent back into action to hunt a group of replicants, bio-engineered synthetic humans. In his hunt for the missing replicants, Deckard runs into new threats and has to ask himself a number of difficult questions. The 2017 sequel Blade Runner 2049 starred Ryan Gosling (Drive, The Notebook) as Officer K, a replicant blade runner who discovers a dark underground secret. In his mission to prevent the destruction of society, K teams up with an older Deckard to uncover their threat. Blade Runner 2099 is set to take place 50 years after Blade Runner 2049.
Northern Ireland Screen said, “Northern Ireland Screen is extremely disappointed that Blade Runner 2099 is not going ahead at this time due to the ongoing writers’ strike. The project has been prepping on the ground in Belfast for many months now. The WGA strike has been halting production all over the world and we hope a fair deal is reached so the crew can get back to work.”
Fans of Blade Runner will have to wait until spring 2024 to experience the new Amazon series.
