Actor Jensen Ackles (Supernatural, Smallville) will join Amazon Prime‘s The Boys in its third season, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Ackles will once again be working with Eric Kripke (Timeless, Revolution), The Boys’ current showrunner and creator of Supernatural.
Jensen announced the casting in a video posted to his Instagram. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jensen will play the first celebrity superhero, Soldier Boy, a World War II veteran whose hero status went on to impact the country’s culture for years to come.
Ackles spent 15 years on Supernatural as one-half of the Winchester brothers. He and co-star Jared Padalecki (Gilmore Girls, Friday the 13th) were taping the series’ final season when the threat of COVID-19 halted production, via The Hollywood Reporter. The team hopes to tape the final episodes of The CW’s longest-running series sometime later this month.
“When I was a child, I had a crazy, impossible dream — to provide Jensen Ackles with gainful employment,” said Kripke, via The Hollywood Reporter. ” I’m happy to say that dream has come true. Jensen is an amazing actor, an even better person, smells like warm chocolate chip cookies, and I consider him a brother. As Soldier Boy, the very first superhero, he’ll bring so much humor, pathos, and danger to the role. I can’t wait to be on set with him again, and bring a bit of Supernatural to The Boys.”
The Boys recently dropped the final trailer for their second season, set to stream September 4 on Amazon Prime. The comic-book adaptation follows group of disgraced mercs seeking to destroy a corrupt faction of superheroes who hide their ulterior motives behind platitudes of heroism. Fans can expect more surprises from the motley crew of heroes, villains, and everything in-between. The series stars Karl Urban (Star Trek, Almost Human), Antony Starr (Banshsee), Jack Quaid (The Hunger Games, Logan Lucky), and Erin Moriarty (Blood Father, Jessica Jones). The series added Shawn Ashmore (The Following, X-Men) to the cast this season.
