Amazon MGM’s long-awaited Mass Effect series has found its showrunner in Doug Jung, an American screenwriter and producer best known for his work on the Netflix series Mindhunter and science fiction films like 2016’s Star Trek: Beyond and 2018’s The Cloverfield Paradox. The news, which comes courtesy of Deadline, marks a decisive step towards the series’ release since Variety first announced Amazon would adapt Electronic Arts’ classic video game franchise last November. Writing the show will be Dan Casey (Kin, F9); both creators will also assist in executive production of the series.
The Mass Effect franchise first began in 2007 with the release of the eponymous game by development studio BioWare, which was acquired by Electronic Arts the same year. Putting players in the shoes of the stoic Commander Shepherd as they battle their way through a galaxy that is equal parts futuristic and militaristic, the series of third-person shooters/role-playing games has been recognized as an example of great narrative storytelling within the medium of gaming, with particular acclaim for the “Shepherd trilogy” which comprises the first three games.
While negotiations for a potential television adaptation between EA and Amazon Prime Video were rumored as early as 2021 according to Deadline, it was only officially announced last winter. Also involved in the series will be Michael Gamble (Mass Effect 3), an executive producer at BioWare, and Avi Arad (Venom, Ghost In the Shell). Notably, this is not Arad’s first forte into assisting with an adaptation of a beloved video game: he helped produce last year’s Borderlands movie, and is working with Nintendo on their upcoming live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda.
The series does not yet have a release date according to Deadline, but will presumably be available on Amazon’s Prime Video streaming service when it premieres. Those who want to familiarize themselves with Mass Effect beforehand can easily do so by playing the series on most major gaming platforms.
