According to the Hollywood Reporter, Amazon Prime Video will be ending the fantasy neo-noir series, Carnival Row with only two seasons. The series first aired back in August of 2019 and after a grueling three year hiatus, will conclude its short-lived run on the streaming platform in February of 2023.
For those not in the know, Carnival Row is a fantasy drama series based on the unproduced film spec script of Travis Beacham (Pacific Rim, Clash of the Titans), who also served as a co-creator and showrunner on the Amazon series adaptation. Set in a mystical world of monsters and fairies, the show depicts a nation in turmoil as rising tensions between oppressed mythological refugees and human society threatens to escalate into all-out warfare, prompting the titular character of Philo, played by Orlando Bloom (the Pirates of the Caribbean series, the Lord of the Rings trilogy), to investigate into a web of government corruption and political scandal.
The series also stars Cara Delevingne (Suicide Squad, Paper Towns) as Bloom’s love-interest, Vignette Stonemoss, a member of the Fae species who falls in with a dangerous group of Fae thugs known as the Black Raven. Other notable performances include Indira Varma (Game of Thrones, Obi-Wan Kenobi) as Piety Breakspear and Jared Harris (Mad Men, The Crown) as Absalom Breakspear, the Chancellor of the Republic of Burgue.
Erik Oleson (Daredevil, The Man in the High Castle) will serve as the showrunner for the show’s second and final season following the departure of previous showrunners: Beacham, Marc Guggenheim (Arrow, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow), and series co-creator Rene Echevarria (Teen Wolf, The 4400). According to the Hollywood Reporter, the reason for the series’ sudden conclusion has to do with the fact that the show was creatively overhauled for season two, as well as the three year hiatus which was spurred from pandemic-related delays.
The final season of Carnival Row will be released on February 17, 2023, exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.
