The Citadel trailer has finally been declassified. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon Prime Video has released the official trailer for their new spy thriller Citadel after the trailer was delayed earlier this month out of respect for the victims of the train crash in Greece.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Russo Brothers (Avengers: Endgame, From), who executive produce the show, want to use this spy thriller to start a new franchise. Citadel was created to kick-start this new spy franchise which would have spies from different countries come together for the ultimate mission, similar to the Avengers. It was previously detailed by The Hollywood Reporter how the budget for the show increased to more than $200 million due to cost overruns and creative differences. The show had to go through expensive reshoots and writers Josh Appelbaum (Zoo, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) and Andre Nemec (Wonder Park, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol) were replaced by David Weil (Hunters, Invasion).
Citadel is just the latest project from the Russo Brothers, whose previous project was the Netflix spy thriller, Gray Man, which came with a price tag of $250 million. Gray Man became the most expensive movie ever made by Netflix, but it was worth it when the film ranked as the fourth most-watched movie for the streamer.
The show follows the story of the independent global spy agency, Citadel, and its agents. Citadel fell eight years prior. The agency’s job was to uphold the safety and security of everyone but it was destroyed by Manticore, a powerful syndicate manipulating the world from the shadows. When the Citadel fell, its elite agents Mason Kane and Nadia Sinh had their memories wiped as they narrowly escaped death. The spies have managed to remain hidden and build new lives. Until one night, Mason is tracked by a former Citadel colleague who needs their help to prevent Manticore from establishing a new world order. Mason seeks out his former partner Nadia and the two embark on a mission that will take them around the world to stop Manticore, all while dealing with a relationship built on lies, secrets, and a dangerous-yet-undying love.
The cast of the show includes Richard Madden (Game of Thrones, Eternals) as Mason Kane; Priyanka Chopra Jonas (Baywatch, The Matrix Resurrections) as Nadia Sinh; Stanley Tucci (Inside Man, The King’s Man) as Bernard Orlick; Ashleigh Cummings (Vide Noir, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries) as Abby Conroy; and Lesley Manville (The Crown, Sherwood) as Dahlia Archer.
The seven-episode series will premiere on April 28, on Amazon Prime Video. Citadel will debut with two episodes, with new episodes released weekly on Fridays. Don’t forget to watch the trailer below.
