The previously announced scripted series starring Nicolas Cage (Gone in 60 Seconds, Face Off) as Tiger King’s Joe Exotic is being picked up by Amazon Studios, according to Variety. The untitled project will be co-produced by Amazon Studios, Imagine Television Studios and CBS Television Studios.
The project is based on the Texas Monthly article “Joe Exotic: A Dark Journey Into the World of a Man Gone Wild,” by Leif Reigstad. It will center around Joe Shreibvogel (Cage), an eccentric, exotic zoo keeper who fights to keep his private park running in Oklahoma – even at the risk of losing his own sanity. The series will explore the life of Shreibvogel, and how he eventually comes to embody the persona of Joe Exotic, and how he loses himself within that character.
Dan lagana (American Vandal) will act as writer, showrunner, and executive producer on the series under his overall deal at CBS TV Studios. Paul Young (Key & Peele) will executive produce via Make Good Content, alongside Brian Grazer (Empire) and Samie Kim Falvey (Midnight in Paris) for Imagine, Cage for Saturn Films, and Scott Brown (Sharp Objects) and Megan Creydt (Incredible Shrinking Mega Man) for Texas Monthly. Imagine’s James Seidman (A League of Their Own) and Natalie Berkus (When You Are) will oversee the project for the company.
Joe Exotic is the subject of the Netflix docuseries, Tiger King, which has since grown to become a global phenomenon. Variety previously reported that the series reached over 34.3 million viewers in its first 10 days of availability on Netflix.
This project is only the second scripted series to be announced in relation to the character of Joe Exotic. NBCUniversal is also developing an untitled show that will be based on Wondery’s Joe Exotic podcast. It is set to star Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live) as Carole Baskin, a exotic cat enthusiast who sets out to shut down Schreibvogel’s park after finding out that he is breeding and using his big cats for profit. The show will rollout across NBC, USA Network and Peacock.
