The Hollywood Reporter claims that Josh Schwartz (Nancy Drew, Dynasty), Stephanie Savage (Endless Love, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle), and Reese Witherspoon (Walk The Line, Election) are collaborating on a project, which is currently under development at the streamer. A Legally Blonde TV series is being developed by Amazon in collaboration with Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine banner. Schwartz and Savage, who graduated from The O.C. and Gossip Girl, have been signed on to write the TV spinoff, with the plot being kept under wraps.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marc Platt (Cruella, The Girl On The Train), Amazon MGM Studios, Lauren Neustadter (Where The Crawdads Sing, Little Fires Everywhere) of Hello Sunshine, Witherspoon, and Schwartz and Savage under the Fake Empire banner are all producing the prospective spinoff.
The first film in the Legally Blonde movie series, which is based on Amanda Brown’s (Family Trust, Elle Woods: Blonde At Heart) novel, came out in 2001, according to Deadline. It launched Witherspoon to stardom as it starred her as Harvard Law student Elle Woods, a pop culture phenomenon. Its 2003 sequel titled Legally Blonde 2
Witherspoon’s intentions to play Elle Woods again in the upcoming TV show are unknown. Since acquiring the illustrious studio a few years ago, Amazon has been searching the MGM library for titles to bring back to life. The goal of the streamer and Hello Sunshine is to expand the Legally Blonde movie franchise into a number of shows, with plans for a second possible spinoff currently in the works.
In 2019, Witherspoon expressed interest in returning to Elle when she was in her 40s to The Hollywood Reporter. Amidst efforts to bring Legally Blonde back to life, she stated: “I want to discover what age means to that character. Aging, contemporary ideas, how things have evolved — or not evolved.”
The Hollywood Reporter claims that Schwartz and Savage’s credits also include Apple’s City on Fire and updates for The CW’s Dynasty and Nancy Drew.
Amazon representatives declined to comment.
Witherspoon has been associated with Amazon since Daisy Jones and the Six.
