According to Variety, the comic series Paper Girls is to be developed for Amazon. The graphic novel series hails from writer Brian K. Vaughan (Saga, Y) and illustrated by Cliff Chiang (Wonder Woman Vol. 1); along with Amazon Studios and Legendary Television, in collaboration with Brad Pitt’s (Fight Club, Inglorious Bastards) Plan B Shingle production banner.
“We love bringing Paper Girls; to our global Amazon Prime Video audience as an original series. Brian’s beloved, widely acclaimed and multiple Eisner Award-winning story delivers a gripping concept grounded by compelling characters,” said Albert Cheng, COO and co-head of television at Amazon Studios, via Variety. “We have a great partnership with Legendary and Plan B, and the perfect creative team of Stephany, Christopher, and Christopher, to bring Brian and Cliff’s graphic novels to life.”
Stephany Folsom (Toy Story 4, Missing You) is set to write and executive produce the adaptation, alongside Christopher Cantwell (Halt and Catch Fire) and Christopher C. Rogers (Shadow Runner) will act as co-showrunners. The original comic was published in 2015 with 30 issues since the release. It follows the story of four paper delivery girls, who have an unexpected interaction with time-travelers on the morning after Halloween in 1988. The girls go on quests to save the world, traveling through time and growing, learning and experiencing the future in front of their eyes while they choose to embrace or eject their fate.
“As huge fans of what Brian and Cliff created in Paper Girls, we couldn’t be more excited by the opportunity to bring this incredible adventure to life,” said Folsom, Cantwell and Rogers in a statement via Variety. “This is a story with so much heart, and so many unique colors and dimensions — our sincere hope is not only to do justice to the source material, but to make Paper Girls; unlike anything else currently on TV.”
There is no word on when this series will debut to Amazon.
