Amazon Gives Green Light to New ‘Jack Ryan’ Series Starring John Krasinski

Super spy Jack Ryan is back, this time on the small screen. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Amazon’s TV drama Jack Ryan has officially been picked up for a 10-episode series that will be available to watch on the company’s streaming service.

The title character was the star of many espionage and military books written by the late Tom Clancy. Previously portrayed in films by heavy hitters such as Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine, he will be played by John Krasinski (The Office) in the television series. Carlton Cuse (Lost, Bates Motel) and Graham Roland (Fringe, Almost Human) will be serving as the series main writers and showrunners, having developed the show together. Executive producers include Michael Bay (Transformers, Black Sails) and Brad Fuller (The Purge, The Last Ship).

The series will follow Ryan as he races against time to stop a global terrorist threat. While not explicitly based on any specific Tom Clancy novels, Cuse said during an interview with IGN at the this summer’s Television Critics Association press tour that the series will be an updated, contemporary take on the character, with Ryan “in his prime as a CIA analyst/operative”. In regards to Krasinski’s casting, Cuse said that The Office alum was “the first guy that really came into our mind[…]The character needs to be cerebral and also physical, and then John has the extra added benefit of being funny, and that’s something that I also think had not been fully realized in the other incarnations of the character”. No word yet on whether Krasinski’s Ryan will look at the camera in disbelief whenever something ridiculous happens.

Roy Price, head of Amazon Studios, said “We’re excited to add the Jack Ryan global franchise to our robust originals pipeline[…]Our customers will enjoy a compelling adaptation of the action-packed spy thriller book series, further raising the bar for the quality level of storytelling that has made Prime Video a leading destination for content”.

Jack Ryan is yet another small screen adaptation of a former big screen property. The popularity and critical acclaim of shows like FX’s Fargo, NBC’s Hannibal, and A&E’s Bates Motel have proven that it helps to have a big brand name in order to stand out in a sea of original programming. It looks like Amazon is aiming to follow this trend with their new series.

Jack Ryan has not been given an official release date, but now that it’s been officially picked up, production will most likely begin soon.
