Prime Video has revealed that they are making a God of War series based off of the beloved video game series under the same name. According to Deadline, the project has found a director to direct the first two episodes of the series. The director chosen is Frederick E.O. Toye (The Boys, Fallout) along with him is the showrunner Ronald D. Moore (Outlander: Blood of My Blood, Men in Kilts: A Roadtrip with Sam and Graham).
The series will focus on the Norse era of Kratos’ journey. The God of War video game takes place after the original three games, where it focused on the Greek era of Kratos’ journey. When the game was released in 2018 Kratos was seen with a son named Atreus. His late wife had passed away, who’s wish was to have her ashes spread across the highest mountain in all of the nine realms. According to Deadline, the series will show Kratos trying to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus will try to teach his father how to be a better human.
According to Deadline, Prime Video quietly doubled an order for two seasons earlier this year. The project was originally greenlit by Prime Video in December 2022. The project went underway following Moore’s arrival as the showrunner. There have also been additional executive producers included on this project, including but not limited to, Maril Davis (Outlander: Blood of My Blood, For All Mankind), Cory Barlog (God of War 2018, God of War 2), Naren Shankar (The Expanse, Grimm), Matthew Graham (The Spanish Princess, Electric Dreams), Asad Qizilbash (Twisted Metal, Until Dawn), Carter Swan (The Last of Us, Until Dawn), Hermen Hulst (Gran Turismo, Until Dawn), Roy Lee (Weapons, The Long Walk), and Brad Van Arragon (Juno, Yellowjackets).
The series is in its pre-production phase and casting is underway. We will have to stay tuned for any future updates regarding the series.
