Amazon Announces ‘Rings of Power’ As Official Title For ‘Lord of the Rings’ Series

Amazon first announced mere rumors of production of a Lord of the Ringscentered show in 2017, and ever since then little to no information has been given surrounding the show. All fans of the J.R.R Tolkien masterpiece have received is a confirmation of when the show takes place, a cast list with no character names and a mere release date.

However, today fans have finally garnered a sizable, crucial piece of information about the long awaited fantasy epic, the title. Straight from Amazon Studios themselves, the new show will be titled The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

The premiere of the show, September 2, grows ever closer and this title announcement shows fans that Amazon is not afraid to begin teasing more and more of the show’s content as the date quickly approaches.

The Rings of Power unites all the major stories of Middle-earth’s Second Age: the forging of the rings, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, the epic tale of Númenor, and the Last Alliance of Elves and Men,” showrunners JD Payne (Star Trek Beyond, 2022 Flash Gordon project) and Patrick McKay (Jungle Cruise, Goliath) wrote in Amazon’s press release according to The Ringer. “Until now, audiences have only seen on-screen the story of the One Ring—but before there was one, there were many … and we’re excited to share the epic story of them all,.”

The series will be set during the second age of Middle Earth, meaning these events will be thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit trilogy and the original Lord of the Rings trilogy. Tolkien’s writings say that the second age is marked by the rise of Sauron in Middle Earth, but also of the rise of Numenor, one of the earliest kingdoms of man.

The announcement leans heavily into the ancient feel of the show’s setting by having an ominous fog brush over the barren lands of Middle-Earth, while the iconic rings of power are forged. Having a mixture of both comforting nostalgia and eerie mystery, this latest glimpse at the show gives fans more to obsess over.
