Amazon Prime Video has announced that the video game Fallout is being adapted for a television series on the platform and will be overseen by Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan (Person of Interest, The Dark Knight) and Lisa Joy (Pushing Daisies, Burn Notice), according to Deadline. This news is the first project from the Westworld creator duo under the Amazon Studios deal with their production company Kilter Films. The two will be joined by the developer and publisher, Bethesda Game Studios/Softworks, for the original video game series. Fallout’s television series will be executive produced by Nolan, Joy, Athena Wickham (Westword, Revolution), Todd Howard (The Elder Scrolls), and James Altman (Director of Publishing Operations for Bethesda Softworks). Currently, there are no attached cast members for the series nor an expected release date.
Nolan is known for his screenwriting partnership with his critically acclaimed brother, director and writer Christopher Nolan (Dunkirk, The Dark Knight). The duo has worked together on writing the film Memento starring Guy Pearce (), thriller The Prestige starring Christian Bale (The Fighter) and Hugh Jackman (Logan), The Dark Knight Trilogy, and Interstellar. In the television realm, Nolan created, wrote for, directed, and produced the CBS drama Person of Interest starring Jim Caviezel (The Thin Red Line) and Taraji P. Henson (Hustle & Flow, Hidden Figures, Empire). Recently, he has created, wrote for, directed, and produced the HBO hit dystopian series Westworld for which he has been nominated twice for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series in addition to one nomination each for Directing and Writing for a Drama Series.
Joy co-created Westworld with Nolan in addition to writing for the cult hit Pushing Daisies which starred Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Anna Friel (Brookside, Sunset Strip) and USA Network’s Burn Notice starring Jeffrey Donovan (LBJ, Fargo, J. Edgar) and Gabrielle Anwar (Once Upon a Time). Most recently, she wrote, produced, and directed her feature film debut Reminiscence. The film starred Hugh Jackman (Logan, The Prestige) and Rebecca Ferguson (Drowning Ghost, The White Queen).
The source material, Fallout, is a video game series that debuted in 1997 and has four releases in its main series. Additionally, the video game series has also had four spin-off games such as 2010’s Fallout: New Vegas and 2018’s Fallout 76. Fallout follows a post-war America after a nuclear fallout in the 1950s with its survivors living in vaults scattered across the country. Set in the future 22nd and 23rd centuries, Fallout transitioned its game style from a traditional Role-Playing format to an Action Role-Playing genre in 2004.
