For those who felt the season one finale of Alien: Earth felt incomplete, Deadline reports a second season has been ordered at FX. After much speculation, creator Noah Hawley (Fargo, Legion) will return to pen the prequel series set two years before the events of the original Alien film. In addition to the season renewal, Hawley resigned his overall deal with Disney’s TV division.
“It has been our great privilege to work with Noah for more than a decade on some of FX’s best and biggest shows, and we are thrilled to extend our partnership well into the future,” said FX Chairman John Landgraf, via Deadline. “Noah never stops surprising us with truly original stories— and his unique ability to bring them to vibrant life as a director and producer as well as writer makes him extraordinary. We can’t wait to get to work on the next season of Alien: Earth, as well as some equally exciting future projects in advanced development.”
Premiering in August, Alien: Earth‘s first season saw what happens when a spoiled trillionaire’s experimentation with alien cargo goes terribly wrong — or right, depending on who you ask. The series had a stellar ensemble cast, including Timothy Olyphant (Justified, Stick), Babou Ceesay (The Best of Enemies, Wolfe), Sydney Chandler (Don’t Worry Darling, Sufar), Alex Lawther (Black Mirror, Andor), Essie Davis (The Babadook, Girl with a Pearl Earring), and Moe Bar-El (The Bureau, Tehran). The series scored well with critics and fans alike, earning a 94% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, continuing the franchise’s success after Alien: Romulus.
According to Deadline, Hawley serves as an executive producer, joining Alien film director Ridley Scott, Scott Free President David W. Zucker (The Good Wife, Dope Thief), Simon Emanuel (The Batman, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny), Monica Macer (Queen Sugar, Prison Break), Emilia Serrano (Promised Land, Gentefied), Peter Calloway (Surface, The Nevers), Bob DeLaurentis (The Umbraella Academy, The Unusuals), John Campisi, and Clayton Krueger (Blade Runner 2099, Still Missing Morgan).
While Hawley has reached a new peak in his relationship with FX, their winning success began a little over a decade ago with his anthology series, Fargo, based on the 1990s film. According to Deadline, the series alone has garnered seven Emmy Awards and 70 nominations. It’s also been a favorite with critics, averaging a 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
“I learned first-hand that Noah was a unique talent while we worked on Fargo at FX,” Eric Shrier, President, Disney Television Studios & Global Original Strategy, said via Deadline. “He has gone on to make many of the best shows in television, and I couldn’t be more excited that Noah will continue his FX partnership and broaden it across Disney Entertainment Television.”
“I’m thrilled that this expanded deal opens the door to new opportunities across all of Disney Entertainment Television,” said Hawley via Deadline. “FX has always supported bold, character-driven storytelling. From the very beginning with Fargo, they’ve encouraged me to take creative risks and follow the story wherever it leads. I’m grateful to continue exploring the world of Alien: Earth alongside our partners, cast, and crew as we begin the next chapter.”
Production for season two of Alien: Earth will begin next year, moving from Thailand to London, Deadline reports. Season one is available to stream on Hulu.
