According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has casted Little House on the Prairie‘s first role. Alice Halsey is set to play Laura. Halsey has appeared in Apple TV+’s Lessons in Chemistry and in Days of Our Lives on Peacock. She has also appeared as a guest on NBC’s Night Court.
Netflix states that the Little House reboot is, “a transformed adaptation of Wilder’s semi-autobiographical books,” also noting that, “the series will offer a kaleidoscopic view of the struggles and triumphs of those who shaped the frontier.”
The Hollywood Reporter states that Little House on the Prairie, the TV series based off Laura Ingalls’ beloved novels, comes from showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine (The Boys, The Vampire Diaries), CBS Studios, and Anonymous Content Studio. Netflix gave it a series order in January after several years of said development between Anonymous Content and then Paramount Studios, which continued after CBS Studios picked the show up after Paramount Studios shut it down. The show’s development began in 2020.
Sonnenshine tells Netflix, “I fell deeply in love with these books when I was five years old. They inspired me to become a writer and a filmmaker, and I am honored and thrilled to be adapting these stories for a new global audience with Netflix.”
The Hollywood Reporter also mentions that Sonnenshine, Joy Gorman Wettels of Joy Coalition (The Son of No One, The Meddler), Trip Friendly of Friendly Family Productions, Dana Fox (Wicked, Cruella), and Susanna Fogel (Booksmart, The Flight Attendant) will all executive produce on the set of Little House on the Prairie. Notably, Friendly’s father, Ed Friendly, held rights to Wilder’s novels and was an executive producer of the original Little Prairie series.
The original series, which streams on Peacock, featured Michael Landon (Highway to Heaven, Bonanza), Melissa Gilbert (Guest Artist), Karen Grassle (Wyatt Earp, Not to Forget), Rachel (Sunshine) and Sidney (Hambone and Hillie, Sunshine) Greenbush, and Melissa Sue Anderson (Happy Birthday to Me, The Equalizer)as the prominent Ingalls family.
