Alejandro Amenábar, Director of ‘The Others,’ Will Adapt Spanish Graphic Novel into Series for AMC

AMC and Spain’s pay-TV broadcaster Movistar+ will work with Alejandro Amenábar (The Others) to create his first television drama. The project will be adapted from Paco Roca and Guillermo Corral’s graphic novel El Tesoro del Cisne Negro (The Treasure of the Black Swan), according to Deadline.

Via Deadline, the story of the graphic novel centers around young diplomat Alex Ventura who teams with a combative public official and a brilliant American lawyer to recover treasure stolen by Frank Wild, who travels the world plundering historic items from the ocean. The full cast and writing-directing team is not currently available.

Although the project is currently untitled, production for the 6-part series is expected to begin this summer with a 2021 premiere. AMC will show the series in the US, Canada, UK, Latin America and the Caribbean; Movistar+ will stream the series in Spain.

Prior to signing on to the graphic novel adaptation for AMC, Amenábar won the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar in 2005 for The Sea Inside, which told the story of Ramon Sampedro in his fight to legalize euthanasia. It starred Javier Bardem (Loving Pablo), Belén Rueda (The Orphanage) and Lola Dueñas (I’m So Excited). He also directed Nicole Kidman (Bombshell) in The Others in 2001.

The chief operations officer at AMC Studios Ed Carroll said, “This project is uniquely a Spanish/American story inspired by real life events that at times seem more unbelievable than fiction – replete with courtroom drama, international intrigue, and even the largest recovered sunken treasure in history,” via Deadline.
