Marvel’s Echo is an upcoming television series which is a spin-off from the show, Hawkeye, on Disney+. It will be based on the Marvel Comics character Echo, aka Maya Lopez, who is played by Alaqua Cox. Comicbook reports the new actress discussed the upcoming series in an interview with Brandon Davis at Disney’s D23 Expo.
“It’s just so crazy that I’m getting my own show after Hawkeye. That was like my first acting role, ever,” Cox said via Comicbook. The backstory of Maya was that she is the deaf daughter of Willie Lincoln played by Zahn McClarnon (Longmire, Dark Winds), who is one of the Kingpin’s enforcers. Wilson Fisk played Vincent D’Onofrio (Full Metal Jacket, Jurassic World), who’s nickname is Kingpin had Lincoln murdered and he died in front of his daughter Maya. Kingpin became a father figure to Maya after her father died. Fisk adopted and raised Maya, granting the dying wish of his henchman Lincoln. Fisk has another reason to be interested in Maya. Maya’s special ability is that she can recreate any human movement she sees, this is how she gets her nickname Echo.
Echo is a deaf Native American and former commander of the Tracksuit Mafia. The show will follow when Cox’s character returns to her native home state of Oklahoma to explore her Native American heritage and embrace her family and community.
At D23, Brandon Davis interviewed Cox and here’s what she had to say about her upcoming role. “I don’t know why they’re giving me this opportunity, but I’m just grateful. I’m excited for the support and being able to advocate for the Deaf community. We want to have that equality and get more people involved. I’m just so grateful for all of the opportunities I’ve been given.” , Cox said via Comicbook.
“It’s crazy how much my life has already changed because I was a college dropout”, she continued. “I worked at a factory. I’m so excited to show people who I am and what I can do, what anybody can do.”
Echo is set for a 2023 release on Disney+
