Much like the real universe, Marvel Universe has not stopped expanding.
Variety reports that the first spinoff of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD premiered today. The series normally runs on ABC network and has pulled in a fairly respectable audience since its premiere in September of 2014. The show followed fan favorite Phil Coulson, a lovable but mostly straitlaced SHIELD agent, as he and his team fight and work with entities like Hydra and the Inhumans. Joss Whedon, fresh off his Avengers gig (for the first time) created the show with his brother Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. There have been 74 episodes during the course of the first four seasons, but ABC is expanding the world of SHIELD stories.
The SHIELD spinoff is entitled Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD: Slingshot. Audiences familiar with the original series will understand the reprisal of Natalia Cordova-Buckley’s character, Elena “Yo-Yo” Rodriguez. Yo-Yo is in possession of some major super-speed and is a member of the Inhumans. Yo-Yo now has to learn to live with new restrictions and the ever-pesky presence of SHIELD members, who will also make appearances on the spinoff. The series is now available on ABC.com and their digital apps, as well as on their Youtube channel.
This new series also serves to set up the upcoming ABC series The Inhumans. Although the show is slated to appear on regular televisions in its premiere in fall 2017, the first two episodes will also be shown in IMAX theaters to really get the Marvel-loving hearts pumping.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns on Tuesday, January 10.
