The well received Showtime comedy I Love That For You has officially been canceled after just one season. Before its cancellation, it was the last scripted series that remained on Showtime due to the reign of new CEO Chris McCarthy, who succeeds David Nevins.
The series, created and executively produced by Vanessa Bayer (Trainwreck, DC League of Super-Pets) and Jeremy Beiler (Men in Black 3, Morning Glory) is inspired by true events. The comedic series follows a childhood survivor of leukemia named Joanna Gold, who is portrayed by Bayer. In the show, she chases her lifelong dream of hosting a home shopping channel.
According to Deadline, a spokesperson for Showtime stated in regards to the cancellation that “we want to thank Vanessa, Jeremy and Jessi, along with the incredible cast and crew for their hard work and wish them the best going forward.”
Showrunners Jessi Klein (Big Mouth, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On) and Michael Showalter (Wet Hot American Summer, The Big Sick) are incredibly fond of the series and extremely disappointed in the cancellation. It was stated that the second season had even already been written.
So many scripted series have been canceled on Showtime due to the changes that new CEO McCarthy is making. Shows like The L Word: Generation Q, American Gigolo, Let the Right One in and now comes the cancellation of I Love That for You.
Creators are still hoping to get the second season picked up elsewhere, with Annapurna behind the series, they plan on shopping I Love That for You. Showtime has been reluctant to renew any series. The last one being officially renewed was Yellowjackets in December of 2022.
McCarthy has stated to stay in the three lanes of high-stakes powerful worlds, complex characters and subversive antiheroes in the remodel of Showtime.
Fans and creators are keeping their fingers crossed in hopes of getting season two of I Love That for You picked up and aired elsewhere.
