A&E’s ‘Born This Way’ Returning in July

A&E’s docu-series Born This Way shows the personal lives of seven adults with Down syndrome pursuing their dreams. The show premiered its first season late last year and was renewed for a second season in January.

Now a date has been set for the upcoming season of Born This Way, TV Series Finale reports. The network’s critically acclaimed and award-winning original docu-series is produced by Bunim/Murray Productions. Born This Way also shows these seven adults defying the odds and also gives their parents the opportunity to share their own experiences with raising their loved ones to live as independently as possible. The docu-series is filmed in Southern California and the show proved to be quite popular among all demographics (Adults 25-54 up 84%, adults 18-49 up 64%, total viewers up 67%).

Born This Way was recently chosen as one of the six honorees for the 2015 Television Academy Honors, an award that recognizes television programming that not only informs the general public but inspires others as well. Elaine Frontain Bryant, EVP and Head of Programming for A&E Network stated “This remarkable and inspiring series exemplifies the quality original programming A&E strives to bring to our viewers. By honoring and embracing diversity on television, Born This Way is uniquely redefining the art of honest storytelling and altering the way society views individuals with differences.”

The second season will dive deeper into the lives of Rachel, Elena, Sean, Steven, Cristina, John, and Megan. Rachel continues to work for an insurance company and is excited for her brother’s upcoming wedding. After visiting the doctor, Rachel realizes that she needs to lead a healthier lifestyle. Sean takes a major step towards independence by moving into his own apartment with his friend Steven. Sean wants to focus on finding a girlfriend and after several blind dates he gives one woman a promise ring. John is continuing to pursue his music career as a rapper and his parents let him know that they won’t be able to financially support him for too long so this motivates him to work harder to achieve his dreams before having to look into other career options. Steven hopes to find a girlfriend in the near future but doesn’t know how he feels about dating someone with a disability. He hopes that his new housemate Sean can help him with some dating advice.

Cristina and her fiancée Angel look forward to their wedding but before they officially tie the knot, they need to master a lot of life skills. Their relationship is put to the test when Cristina starts spending more time away from Angel and learning ballroom dance lessons. Megan’s clothing line, “Megology,” has skyrocketed with orders and she is working hard with her mom to maintain her successful business. Megan currently lives in Colorado but she wants to move back to Los Angeles but she has to prove to her mother that she’s independent enough to live on her own. Elena has difficulty trying to find her place in life and within the group. After a heated argument with her mom, Elena is forced to take responsibility for her actions and learns ways to cope with her emotions.

Born This Way returns on July 26th at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
