Adult Swim released a teaser look at its newest take on the popular animated franchise, Rick and Morty, with Rick and Morty: The Anime set to premiere in late 2024, according to Comicbook.com. The original Rick and Morty series will continue, with season eight anticipated to return sometime next year. However, this newest series promises fans new adventures with an exciting anime-style twist.
Rick and Morty: The Anime originated from a group of animated shorts that premiered during commercial breaks between episodes of the original show via mxdwn. The limited run of animated shorts gained enough popularity among fans that Adult Swim greenlit a full series spin-off.
While Adult Swim has yet to announce the official premiere date, a special screening of the first episode is set to take place this month. Comicbook.com reported that Rick and Morty: The Anime episode one will have its world premiere at the DoKomi 2024 convention in Düsseldorf, Germany. The convention will partner with Adult Swim UK and Warner TV to screen an exclusive look on Sunday, June 30th, for attendees.
The newest trailer teases the over-the-top action prevalent in the show to foster excitement around the soon-world premiere and official series launch. The teaser starts with a group of villainous men in suits surrounding the family home, armed with swords, machine guns and grenades to infiltrate the home. We then see alternate versions of parents Jerry and Beth Smith slicing down the intruders with ease. Normal versions of Beth and Summer Smith plan to get more weapons, as the slow-motion action shots of the Smiths versus the intruders shower the screen with falling bullets.
Per Comicbook.com, the violence sets the stage for the new series, with its official synopsis revealing the following: “Rick relaxes in a pseudo-world between multiverses, Summer helps Space Beth fight the evil Galactic Federation, and Morty falls in love with a mysterious girl who happens to be an atemporal being.”
When Rick and Morty: The Anime premieres later this year, it will be available to stream on Max and Adult Swim’s Saturday Toonami lineup via mxdwn.
