As stated by The Hollywood Reporter, actor Danielle Fishel (The Dish) has announced she has breast cancer. The news was revealed in podcast episode of Pod Meets World. Fishel informed fans, “I was recently diagnosed with DCIS, which stands for Ductal carcinoma in situ, which is a form of breast cancer.” It was spotted early on, and it’s at stage zero.
She guaranteed that she would be okay as she is scheduled for a removal surgery and a follow-up procedure. Fishel made many decisions over the course of her diagnosis. “The only reason I’m sharing it is, if you’ve ever had those thoughts in your life where someone close to you is diagnosed with cancer, somewhere in your mind you think, ‘What would I do if it were me? What would I do in this situation?’” She continued to state during the podcast, “And for some reason in this situation, I always thought, ‘I would suffer in silence. I would get the diagnosis, I would not tell anyone [except] only my small, small group and I would suck it up. Then, when I’m on the other side of it, I would tell people: I’ve gone through this journey and here’s what I did.’”
Fishel shared her perspective after reading Glennon Doyle’s (Untamed) work. Her readings helped Fishel be at ease during this difficult time. She mentioned in writing that people like to talk about their experiences after going through them to give others advice on what they have learned. Fishel disagreed and stated that the position a person can learn from is at the beginning of their journey and the middle.
She told her immediate family about the diagnosis and planned to tell a few friends, including Ryder Strong (Cabin Fever) and Will Friedle (Kim Possible). Later, through her journey, she figured the more she was vulnerable about her diagnoses, the more people felt less alone. People either experienced the diagnosis themselves or knew a loved one who had cancer.
Fishel expressed the reason she found out about her diagnosis was because her yearly mammogram was planned. She highlighted making time out of her busy schedule to attend her appointment. She stated it was vital to schedule a check-up and that if someone has cancer, they should discover their diagnosis at stage zero.
Although Fishel “doesn’t have all the answers yet” and is constantly researching different treatments, she advised listeners about the importance of her health. Depending on the treatment, Pod Meets World will have to be held off.
