Actor Brian Cox Reveals Which Roy Child Should Have Been The Waystar Royco CEO In HBO’s ‘Succession’

Succession debuted in 2018 on HBO, and there have been four seasons since. Created by Jesse Armstrong (Peep Show, Fresh Meat), the season finale of the fourth season premiered in May of 2023. According to Screenrant, one cast member revealed what he would have liked to see this season.

In the final season of Succession, the character Logan Roy, played by Brian Cox (Troy, The Independent) passes away. In light of this tragedy, the other characters in the show fight for the spot as the new Waystar Royco CEO. In the end, the character Tom Wambsgams, played by Matthew Macfadyen (Pride & Prejudice, Operation Mincemeat), took Logan Roy’s place.

In an interview with Screenrant, Cox spoke about his thoughts on Tom Wambsgams becoming the CEO. In this interview, he explained that if he had to choose one of the Roy children to be CEO, he would have chosen Roman Roy, played by Kieran Culkin (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Home Alone).

As Screenrant notes, Cox stated, “None of them can [step up], and the only one, ironically, who I think he feels could step up was Roman, because Roman showed a lot of sensibility, particularly in dealing with the Middle Eastern money — which was fake, and he knew it, and he could see it in season 2. I thought, ‘Wow, there is a potential in Roman,’ as I believe there is, that’s why I think Roman really, really loved his father.”

Cox continued, “I never watch it, if I can, I would say it’s bad enough doing it without having to watch it. [Laughs] My wife, who was actually in it, and she was, as a would-be director, shadowing Mylod, and then she got the role of my ex-mistress, which I thought kind of there was something where everything kind of came together in a way because of that. [Laughs] But, I watched it and I just thought that Roman is such a child, he’s so lost, and everything like that, it’s amazing.”

Fans of Succession can now wonder if they, too, could have seen Roman Roy being a suitable and sensible Waystar Royco CEO.
