After two seasons, the newly reimagined version of the TV series The Wonder Years is coming to an end on ABC. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series will end after its 10-episode second season with a finale that aired on August 16, 2023. The decision also follows the announcement that the season was going to be pushed into the summer, quickly after the second season had finished filming.
The Wonder Years is a series based on another program of the same name that aired in 1988. The show follows a Black middle-class family that lives in Montgomery, Alabama. The show is portrayed through the eyes of 12-year-old protagonist Dean as he is looking back on these youthful days with the mindset of an adult. He then remembers all of the memories and moments in his life with his family in the late 1960s and recalls them as the “wonder years”. The original series aired for six seasons from the years 1988-1993.
The cast for the show includes Don Cheadle (Iron Man 2, House of Lies), Elisha “EJ” Williams (Flip to a Million), Saycon Sengbloh (Respect, Funny Valentines), Laura Kariuki (Along for the Ride), Amari O’Neil (White Water, Raven’s Home), Julian Lerner (Yes Day, Pottersville) and Milan Ray (Charm City Kings, Troop Zero). The series was created by Saladin K. Patterson (The Fighting Temptations). Originally, the series starred Fred Savage (The Princess Bride, Little Monsters) but he was fired from ABC’s newly recreated version last year after an investigation regarding misconduct on the set. Lee Daniels (The Butler, The United States vs. Billie Holiday) and Marc Velez (The Ms. Pat Show) produced the series with Patterson serving as writer and executive producer. Sadly, The Wonder Years currently ranks as the lowest-rated and least-watched ABC series of the summer, thus justifying its cancellation. Its finale was aired on August 16, 2023.
