According to Deadline, ABC has just cast up-and-coming Columbian actress Isabella Gomez (Big Hero 6: the Series, Head of the Class) as a recurring character in season ten of their hit 80’s themed sitcom, The Goldbergs. Gomez is best known for portraying the character of Elena on Netflix’s One Day at a Time, a reboot of the original 1975 sitcom by the same name starring Rita Moreno (Singin’ in the Rain, West Side Story) and Justina Machado (Jane the Virgin, Queen of the South). Gomez’s performance as Elena also earned her an Impact Award for Best Supporting TV Actress.
For anyone unaware, The Goldbergs is a half-hour, single camera sitcom set in the 1980’s which revolves around the titular family of the Goldbergs, a loving but dysfunctional family hailing from the humble Philadelphia suburb of Jenkintown. The series comes from the mind of Adam F. Goldberg (Schooled, Breaking In) and is loosely inspired by Goldberg’s actual childhood and family memories.
The Goldbergs is executive produced by Goldberg himself, Seth Gordon (The Lost City, Pixels), and Doug Robinson (For Life, Rules of Engagement) and includes such acting talents as Wendi McLendon-Covey (Bridesmaids, RENO 911!), Troy Gentile (Nacho Libre, Hotel for Dogs), and Hayley Orrantia (Schooled, Christmas is Canceled). The show formerly featured Jeff Garlin (Wall-E, Curb Your Enthusiasm) as Murray, the no-nonsense, conservative patriarch of the Goldberg family, before his off-screen death preluding season ten. As written by Deadline, Gomez will appear as Carmen, a newly hired waitress at the 50s-themed diner where Adam Goldberg, played by Sean Giambrone (Solar Opposites, Kim Possible [2019 film adaptation]), is working at. She will make her debut series appearance two weeks from now in the ninth episode of the season titled “Million Dollar Reward,” written by Mike Sikowitz (Welcome to the Family, Larry Gaye: Renegade Male Flight Attendant).
Gomez’s inaugural episode will air on Wednesday, November 30, at 5:30 p.m. PST (8:30 p.m. EST), exclusively on the ABC channel.
