At the beginning of February, ABC announced the pilot order for an hour long drama Las Reinas (The Queens), per Deadline Hollywood. Las Reinas alongside ABC will be the Mark Gordon Co, so producing will be Designated Survivor producer Mark Gordon. Featured writer Dean Georgaris is the constructor of the pilot. Creator of ABC’s series Conviction Liz Friedlander will be directing the Las Reinas pilot.
Las Reinas focuses on Detective Alex (previously Sonya) De La Reina as a case forces her to delve into her own past. Fortuitously enough for the detective, her past involves a complicated family: the single most influential criminal outfit in Miami. Sonya De La Reina must attempt to juggle family, the law, loyalty, and her own morality.
Also, in February Variety learned that Sonia Braga was cast as Gabriella De La Reina, the head of this incredibly powerful crime syndicate. After the death of her husband, Gabriella turned the organization into a massively profitable, international criminal enterprise. All she is missing is to bring her estranged daughter, a Miami detective, back into the family fold. In addition Narcos creator Chris Brancato was set as the show runner.
Playing the lead role of Alex De La Reina will be Daniella Alonso of NBC’s Revolution and TNT’s Animal Kingdom, per Deadline Hollywood. Alex is two years out from abandoning her family, and may need her mother Gabriella’s help in order to solve the case of a missing girl.
This week Variety also reported that John Corbett has been cast to star in Las Reinas. Corbett will be playing Lieutenant Donald Worden, Alex’s mentor and her former partner. He brought her into the police academy, and does not consider Alex reconnecting with her family as a viable option.
Las Reinas has no definitive release date, but the pilot will premiere in 2017, hopefully with some twists that make it different from the other crime dramas on air.
