Whoopi Goldberg (The View) will return to scripted TV in a new ABC comedy.
Whoopi Goldberg has been selected to star in ABC comedy, Delores & Jermaine. The ABC comedy pilot will not interrupt Goldberg’s role on talk show, The View.
This pilot will center on the life of Jermaine Fowler. The character moves in with his strict grandmother who is also a former D.C. cop. Come to find out, she needs her grandson’s youthful spirit in her life as much as he needs her wisdom. Playing that strict grandmother will be Goldberg. Her character, Delores, takes Jermaine in after he’s kicked out of his own house.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the casting of the ABC comedy will not have any affect on Goldberg’s role on The View. She has successfully been a moderator and co-host of The View since 2005. Her new pilot will be shot in New York, and if Jermaine & Delores goes to series, Goldberg will continue with both the TV series and The View.
For the comedian-actress-host, this pilot marks Goldberg’s return to scripted TV. Her small-screen roles include a recurring gig on Fox’s Glee, as well as voice work on Suburgatory, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland and NBC’s Whoopi. Whoopi ran for only one season in 2003-2004. Some of her scripted works include Star Trek: The Next Generation, Bagdad Cafe and writing/executive producing/guest-starring on Lifetime’s Strong Medicine.
Alongside Fowler, Daniel Chun (The Office) will pen the script for Jermaine & Delores. The executive producers include Daniel Chun, Jermaine Fowler, Michael Rotenberg, and Avi Gilbert. Also credited with executive producing will be Goldberg and her producing partner, Tom Leonardis.
Goldberg is represented by CAA and Principato-Young.
