ABC’s picked up Wipeout for a seventh season and will include a “tournament of champions” season finale.
According to Deadline, the show will feature 24 contestants competing on the world’s largest extreme obstacle course. The winners of each episode will be brought in at the end of the season to compete for the title of Ultimate Wipeout Champion.
In 2012, ABC renewed the show for a sixth season and it marked the return of co-host Jill Wagner. Wagner was replaced in season five with Vanessa Minnillo. The sixth season brought new obstacles and redesigned Wipeout Zones. The seventh season will feature special themed episodes, including one episode where the prize is a date with Wagner.
“We are always looking for ways to keep the show fresh and exciting,” said Matt Kunitz, creator and executive producer. “This year, we are amping up the competition with a season long tournament of champions.”
Wipeout isn’t as strong in rating as it was early on, it is still one of the few summer shows that pops a number and it has good family co-viewing numbers. Last summer it was No. 1 family co-viewing show airing Thursdays at 8 PM. It ranked No. 1 with Kids 2-11 beating out broadcast rivals in the Thursday hour.
Kunitz and Scott Larsen created and executive produce the show. Endemol USA produces. Wipeout is hosted by John Anderson (ESPN’s SportsCenter) and John Henson (E! Entertainment’s Talk Soup).
