The ABC comedy series Fresh Off the Boat starring Constance Wu (Crazy Rich Asians) and Randell Park (Aquaman; Always Be My Maybe) is reporting cancelled after six season being on air. The announced about the cancellation came late last week after press release was sent out detailing the specifics regarding the shows ending, according to Vulture, who was the first to break news about the shows cancellation.
The reason for the shows cancellation comes from a steady decline in the show’s viewer ratings. To try and revive the show from it dwindling audience the shows air time moved from its usual Tuesday time to Fridays where it continued to be unsuccessful. After 6 seasons, the show has produced and aired over 100 episodes making it the longest running sitcom to feature a fully Asian American cast. The only other time a fully Asian cast was on air in a similar manner was 1994’s All American Girl starring comedian Margaret Cho, the show, however, which also originally aired on ABC but only lasted one season due to Cho’s personal health problems and constant conflict with the then ABC executives on decisions of the show should be run.
Series creator Nahnatchka Khan expressed her thoughts about the shows cancellation saying “I’m so proud of the show and what we’ve accomplished over the past six seasons. Thank you to everyone at ABC and 20th Century Fox Television for going on this ride with us. It was truly a special experience and hopefully will forever be a reminder of all the stories out there that deserve to be told.” (Entertainment Weekly)
The series is based on Eddie Huang life memoir Fresh Off the Boat that, like the novel, is about an Asian American family that move to the Orlando, Florida during the 1990s to raised their three sons and open a restaurant in pursue of the American Dream. Eddie Huang, who is a character in the series is played by Hudson Yang with Constance Wu playing his mother Jessica Huang and Randel Park as Eddie’s father, Louis Huang.
Fresh Off the Boat will conclude at the end of its 6thseason with its final episode air date set for February 21st, 2020.
