

According to Deadline, ABC has renewed Scrubs and Shifting Gears for the 2026-27 season. The Tim Allen (Home Improvement, Last Man Standing) series Shifting Gears has been renewed for a third season, while the Scrubs revival will return with a second instalment. The renewal of both the Comedy series leaves the fate of one current ABC scripted series up in the air. Freshman drama procedural R.J. Decker, starring Scott Speedman (Animal Kingdom, Underworld: Evolution), has yet to have another season be announced.
As per Deadline, as of now, there has been no official episode count for both series. It is stated that they could once again produce a limited number of episodes. The first season of Scrubs has nine episodes, while Shifting Gears has 10 episodes in the first season and 13 in the second. Both Scrubs and Shifting Gears had earned their renewals with strong ratings performances.
According to Deadline, Scrubs brings back J.D. played by Zach Braff (A Good Person, Chicken Little), Turk, played by Donald Faison (Remember the Titans, Next Day Air), and Elliot, played by Sarah Chalke (Firefly Lane, Rick and Morty), to Sacred Heart hospital to navigate middle age, new medical realities, and a fresh class of interns. The series also brings back many of the original cast throughout different episodes. Shifting Gears Follows Matt played by Allen, who is a stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop whose life changes when his estranged daughter, Riley, played by Kat Dennings (Two Broke Girls, The House Bunny), and her kids move in.
The Scrubs revival is the highest-rated comedy telecast on any network this season among Adults 18-49 via Deadline. The first season generated over 11 million total viewers across platforms in its first 35 days, according to Nielsen. Shifting Gears was ranked as ABC’s most-watched comedy on linear, with the second season delivering a vast audience throughout multiple platforms.
Scrubs and Shifting Gears are both available to stream on Hulu.
