According to Deadline, ABC has just renewed the critically acclaimed mockumentary sitcom and Emmy-award winning show, Abbott Elementary for third season. The news of Abbott Elementary‘s renewal comes fresh off the heels of their success at the Golden Globes, where the series was able to score three separate awards, including for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy (a quick recap on the 80th Annual Golden Globe Award ceremony can be found here).
For anyone still unaware of this groundbreaking comedy series, Abbott Elementary follows a documentary crew as they record the lives of the underfunded, yet dedicated teachers and staff working at Abbott Elementary School, a predominantly Black Philadelphia public school. Abbott Elementary comes from creator, writer, and executive producer Quinta Brunson (A Black Lady Sketch Show, Magical Girl Friendship Squad); Brunson also stars in the series as the lead character, second-grade school teacher Janine Teagues.
As written by Deadline, season two of Abbott Elementary has been a marked success for ABC with viewership increasing by over 13% since season one and viewership averaging about nine million watchers per episode. Season two also averaged a 3.58 rating in the advertiser-targeted 18-49 demographic over thirty-five days of multi-platform streaming, which is a 31% increase from season one.
Channing Dungey, Chairman and CEO for the Warner Bros. Television Group, had nothing but kind words for Abbott Elementary while commenting on the show’s renewal for a third season, “This renewal is a richly deserved feather in the cap of Quinta Brunson, Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker, and Randall Einhorn, as well as the rest of the cast and crew of Abbott Elementary. Each week, this talented group of artists celebrates true unsung heroes — public school teachers…Abbott Elementary is the gift that keeps on giving, and I look forward to many more magnificent episodes of this brilliant, authentic, and just plain funny series.”
For those looking to catch up on Abbott Elementary, the latter half of season two is currently airing exclusively on ABC and is expected to finish by March 1, 2023. There is still no word as to when fans can expect a premiere date for season three.
