ABC Renews ‘Black-ish’ For Seventh Season

According to TV GuideKenya Barris’ (Girl’s Trip) comedy, black-ish, will return for its seventh season along with its spin-offs mixed-ish (ABC) and grown-ish (Freeform). Black-ish joins 13 other shows that were recently renewed by ABC, including Dancing with the Stars, The Goldbergs, and Stumptown.

Black-ish initially aired on ABC in 2014 starring Anthony Anderson (Scary Movie 3) as Andre “Dre” Johnson, a father of four who begins to question whether his success in life has brought his family a lack of knowledge about their ethnic identities. The series features Rainbow “Bow” Johnson played by Tracee Ellis Ross (Girlfriends), as Dre’s wife, Zoey Johnson played by Yara Shahidi (The Sun is also a Star), as his eldest daughter, Andre Johnson Jr. played by Marcus Scribner (The Good Dinosaur), as his middle child, and Jack Johnson played by Miles Brown (Boy Genius), and Diane Johnson played by Marsai Martin (Little) as his youngest. The show has received acclaim from fans for episodes that discuss a wide range of political and social topics that are typically seen as “taboo,” according to Variety.

The last season of black-ish was centered around Dre and Bow’s efforts to take care of their fifth child, born in season 3, while still struggling to get Andre Jr. back to college after he made the impulsive decision to take a gap year. In this season, Jack and Diane are finally teenagers, meanwhile, Zoey is away at college in the series spin-off grown-ish, also on ABC.

The sitcom mixed-ish was also renewed for a second season. The series acts as a prequel to black-ish, starring Arica Himmel (Before You Know It) as a teenage Bow growing up in the 80s, via TV Guide. In addition to the Johnson Family Universe, Barris recently made his debut in acting with the new series #blackAF starring Rashida Jones (The Office) alongside Barris, both of whom also executive produce.

While fans wait for season 7 of black-ish to air, all six seasons of the series can be streamed on Hulu.
