After months full of teasers, trailers, and sneak peaks, ABC’s Not Dead Yet is set to premiere tonight at 8:30pm EST. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show has been through a long pre-production phase with skeptics asking what would happen with this show’s plot, characters, and overall story.
The series is a loose adaptation of the 2020 novel Confessions of a 40-something F**k Up written by Alexandra Potter. The creators of the show are David Windsor (Galavant, This is Us) and Casey Johnson (This is Us, The Real O’Neals). The main star of the show is Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin, I Want You Back) who according to Deadline just signed on with Disney’s 20th Television through her production company, I Can & I Will, along with executive Molly Breeskin.
Besides Windsor, Johnson, and Rodriguez, the other executive producers would include Mary Viola (Brooklyn’s Finest, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl) and Corey L. Marsh (Holidate, The Babysitter: Killer Queen) along with Wonderland Sound and Vision’s McG.
The ABC comedy involves a woman named Nell Serrano played by Rodriguez who is trying to get back on her feet to revive her career she left behind five years prior. She finds the only available job which involves writing obituaries, and with the help from unlikely sources, she navigates through life and witnesses the supernatural. Along with Rodriguez, the main cast includes Hannah Simone (New Girl, Oldboy) as Sam, Lauren Ash (Superstore, Lars and the Real Girl) as Lexi, Rick Glassman (As We See It, The Sixth Lead) as Edward, Josh Banday (Upload, Mom) as Dennis, and Angela Elayne Gibbs (Hacks, This Is Us) as Cricket.
There would also be a fair share of guest star appearances, which includes Martin Mull (Clue, Roseanne), Ed Begley Jr. (A Mighty Mind, Whatever Works), Mo Collins (Parks and Recreation, Fear the Walking Dead), Telma Hopkins (Family Matters, Dead to Me), Rhea Perlman (Cheers, Matilda), Brittany Snow (Guiding Light, Pitch Perfect), and Julia Sweeney (SNL, Work in Progress).
Given the initial ingredients for the show, some critics have panned the direction and tone of Not Dead yet, with one saying, “My initial instinct was that this would have worked better as an hour-long broadcast dramedy — think Pushing Daisies without the whimsical inspiration, or iZombie minus the zaniness — instead of a single-cam, which leaves everything feeling rushed and thin.” via. The show is set to release on the air via ABC at 8:30pm EST and on Hulu afterwards. You can watch the teaser down below to make your own conclusions and hypothesis about the show’s direction and what might develop.
