ABC has announced that it is giving full seasons to two rookie series: half hour sitcom Mixed-ish and hour long drama Stumptown. The former will be receiving nine additional episodes, while the latter’s full season one episode count has yet to be announced. Both have recieved positive reviews during their run.
Mixed-ish is a prequel spinoff of ABC comedy Black-ish. It follows Rainbow Johnson (Arica Himmel) as she lives her life as a member of a mixed race family in a 1980’s suburb. Per the Hollywood Reporter, the series ranks first among new comedies in the 18-49 demographic.

Stumptown, meanwhile, is a crime drama set in Portland Oregon. The show follows Dex Parios (Cobie Smulders), whose issues with PTSD force her into an unconventional profession to make ends meet. Saddled with gambling debts and a younger brother who needs her support, Parios becomes a private eye. The show recently crossed over to the music world in building up its cast, tapping Greek-American indie musician Ioanna Gika to play character Fiona X.

Karey Burke, President of Entertainment at ABC, spoke on the decision to give each show an extended initial run, stating, “This fall, Stumptown has delivered a rich, inventive and fun thrill ride each week with a stellar cast that features one of the most fearless female characters at the center. Mixed-ish has established itself as one of the sharpest, funniest and most original new comedies of the season.” He coninued, “We’re so proud of this great crop of shows that are all off to strong starts this fall, and we can’t wait to bring more fantastic episodes to our schedule this season.”
The news of both shows’ extensions comes amid a slew of similar announcements by other networks. Earlier this month, Fox announced that it was giving a full 22 episode season t0 its psychological crime thriller Prodigal Son. That news was followed by a similar announcement by CBS for four of its freshman series, including Chuck Lorre sitcom Bob Hearts Abishola and courtroom drama All Rise.
Mixed-ish airs on Tuesdays at 9pm ET/PT. Stumptown airs on Wednesdays at 10pm ET/PT. Each show is in its sixth and fifth week, respectively, on ABC.
