Philadelphia’s finest and funniest educators are about to cross paths with an ensemble of deeply flawed, morally ambiguous, hilariously dysfunctional individuals.
ABC has unveiled the first look at the highly anticipated Abbott Elementary, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia crossover episode, set to air on Wednesday, Jan. 8 at 8:30/7:30c. The teaser, which can be watched below, highlights the hilarious dynamic between the two groups of characters. In the preview, Abbott Elementary’s Janine, played by Quinta Brunson (A Black Lady Sketch Show, BoJack Horseman), proudly calls Abbott “the best elementary school in the universe.” However, It’s Always Sunny’s Dee, portrayed by Kaitlin Olson (The Mick, Family Guy), is less convinced. “Is that what this is?” she questions as she looks around.
According to TVLine, the teaser sets the stage for plenty of laughs as these wildly different worlds collide.
It’s Always Sunny’s Mac, played by Rob McElhenney (Mythic Quest, Fargo), who seems to take a particular interest in Abbott’s Principal Ava, tells her, “Let me know if there’s anything you need. And I mean… anything.
However, not all the characters warm up to each other so easily. In one exchange, Abbott’s Mr. Johnson, played by William Stanford Davis (True Detective, The Oval), calls Sunny’s Frank, played by Danny DeVito (Reno 911!, The Simpsons), “trash,” to which Frank retorts, “You’re the sheriff of trash.”
The crossover event, first teased at San Diego Comic-Con back in July 2024, was officially confirmed last October when McElhenney posted behind-the-scenes photos from the set of Abbott Elementary. Along with McElhenney, It’s Always Sunny stars Glenn Howerton (Fargo, The Mindy Project) as Dennis, Charlie Day (Pacific Rim, Arrested Development) as Charlie, Olson as Dee and DeVito as Frank are all set to make appearances in the episode.
Despite airing on different networks—Abbott on ABC and Sunny on FXX—both shows are owned by Disney, making this crossover possible.
This highly anticipated episode promises to be a comedic clash of two very different worlds, blending the sharp humor of Abbott Elementary with the irreverence of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Fans of both shows are in for a wild ride when the episode airs next week.
