A ‘Sister, Sister’ Reboot is in the Works

As each day passes, a new ’90s sitcom reboot seems to be announced. The most recent reboot in the making is of ABC-turned-The WB’s Sister, Sister. TVGuide.com reported that while a team and network have not officially began planning for the series, original stars Tia and Tamera Mowry are working to develop a reboot of the show. The final episode of Sister, Sister aired in 1999.

The original series, which ran for six seasons, followed the story of two identical twins played by the Mowry twins. After being separated at birth, the two find each other and decide to combine both of their single-parent households into one happily dysfunctional family. Tia recently told Nylon that much of the original series was based on her and her sister’s lives. She recalled, “Every year at the beginning of the season, me and my sister would sit down with the producers and tell them what’s going on with our lives in real life, and they would turn those into stories.”

The series is currently in the very early stages of development. Tia said,”We’re looking, right now, for a producer and a writer, someone who can kind of be a leader of the pack in regards to running the show.” Though the revival is sure to have a built-in-audience of fans of the original series, the process of bringing back the beloved sitcom has been more difficult than she and Tamera originally believed. “I thought people would kind of be jumping on it, but it’s a lot harder than my sister and I thought it would be,” she said. “Everything in my career has always been a challenge.”

While the process may be difficult, there’s a strong chance that a network is willing to attach itself to the series with shows like Will & Grace, Roseanne, and Twin Peaks all making comebacks. Tia firmly believes that Sister, Sister is “not dead in any kind of way,” and while the process has been an uphill battle, she said, “We’re moving forward, we’re taking those strides. They’re slow strides, but we’re pushing as hard as we can to make people happy and make our fans happy.”

Since the series finale of Sister, Sister, Tia and Tamera Mowry have continued to work together, as well as separately. They both starred in the Disney Channel’s Twitches and Twitches Too, Lifetime’s Double Wedding, and their own reality show called Tia & Tamera on the Style NetworkTia also starred on the Nike at Nite sitcom Instant Mom from 2013 to 2015, while Tamera is currently a host on Fox’s syndicated talk show The Real.

Sister, Sister also starred Jackée Harry, Tim Reid, Marques Houston, RonReaco Lee, and Deon Richmond. Here’s to hoping the rest of the cast wants a reboot as much as the Mowry twins do.
