Fans of Mark Millar’s graphic novel Jupiter’s Legacy were clamoring for a deeper look into Netflix’s upcoming adaptation, after teaser trailer whet appetites in February. This week brought just that, with a trailer that unveiled a first look at the series’ principal heroes, as well as two of its main villains.
Nerdist marks Jupiter’s Legacy’s contribution to Netflix’s growing catalogue of independent comic and graphic novel adaptations such as The Umbrella Academy and Locke & Key. This “new entry into the grounded comic book fray” will focus on two generations of superheroes, both of which are glimpsed in the newest teaser trailer and accompanying promotional photos, via Nerdist.
February’s teaser featured voiceover from Josh Duhamel (Transformers, All My Children), who is set to play Sheldon Sampson, leader of the 1930’s superhero group known as The Union. Duhamel’s Utopian is joined in The Union by his wife and his brother, Lady Liberty and Brainwave, who will be played in the Netflix series by Leslie Bibb (Iron Man, Crossing Jordan) and Ben Daniels (The Exorcist, The Crown), respectively. The three superpowered elder statesmen will be seen handing down mantles and expectations to their children and predecessors in Jupiter’s Legacy.
In the Jupiter’s Legacy, Elena Kampouris (Sacred Lies, American Odyssey) and Andrew Horton (How to Talk to Girls at Parties, It Came from the Desert) will play “children of the first wave of superheroes as they try to escape their parents’ shadow” (Nerdist). Kampouris’ Chloe and Horton’s Brandon are siblings and the offspring of The Union founders The Utopian and Liberty Bell.
While heroes are certainly the focus of Netflix’s newest trailer, the page-to-screen sketches start off by showing fans the two generations of villains who it’s protagonists will face off against. Tyler Mane’s (X-Men, Halloween II) Blackstar and his son Hutch, portrayed by Ian Quinlan (Gotham, The Long Road Home) are both featured stirring up trouble in Netflix’s first glance into Jupiter’s Legacy.
Not only does the first look trailer reveal the costumes and appearances of Jupiter’s Legacy’s characters, it does so in a way that honors the source material. As the characters sketched onto the screen from the pages of a comic book, the graphic novel’ original artist, Frank Quitely, is given a specific shoutout. In one of the promotional stills that accompanied the new trailer, Horton’s Paragon can be seen fighting in front of a van that carries’ the name of Jupiter Legacy’s artist: Quitely Express.
According to UPROXX, Jupiter’s Legacy is to be the first of many adaptations from “Millarworld” – Millar’s graphic novel bibliography – at Netflix. “The streamer went for the most ambitious one to get things going,” UPROXX said of Millar’s Jupiter’s Legacy.
With a May 7 premiere, Millarworld fans eagerly await a chance to see Jupiter’s Legacy’s characters in action in a full-length trailer ahead of the series arrival at Netflix.
