It was recently announced on Thursday at the San Diego Comic-Con that Deborah Harkness’ A Discovery of Witches, a number 1 New York Times bestseller, has been acquired by Sundance Now, AMC’s SVOD and Shudder, Amazon’s horror and thriller streaming service. The eight-episode drama of the same name is produced by Bad Wolf who are known for their fan-favourites such as Doctor Who and Torchwood.
A love story and mysterious adventure between Diana Bishop played by Teresa Palmer and Matthew Goode as Matthew Clairmont. A Discovery of Witches chronicles how their relationship threatens to tear apart the unknown but delicate peace between the supernatural and the human in the town. Alex Kingston plays her aunt, Sarah Bishop with Valerie Pettiford as her partner Emily, Mather and Owen Teale as Peter Know, a congregation member. It was adapted for the screen by Kate Brooke, directed by Juan Carlos Medina and produced by Jane Tranter.
Filmed in Britain, in Oxford and Wolf Studio Wales, the story is one that is concerned with a combination of the trivial realities of everyday life as well as the supernatural. ‘‘A Discovery of Witches is a big, bold series with witches, vampires and daemons caught up in an all-too human drama that’s enthralling from the opening minute. It’s unlike anything else on TV and we’re excited to bring it to Shudder members as part of this unique partnership,” added Craig Engler, General Manager, Shudder according to the press release.
The series debut in the US and Canada is currently without a set release date. It will debut on both services at the same time with SundanceTV having the second window linear rights. It will air in the UK on Sky on September 14th, 2018.
