Netflix has announced exciting news- A Different World will be receiving a spinoff series. Run by Felicia Pride and directed by Debbie Allen, will follow the life of the daughter of the main characters of the original series. She will attend Hillman College, a fictional school.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, having been worked on for over a year, Netflix has given a series order to the show. It also included an unorthodox order for the pilot. Maleah Joi Moon, who starred in Hell’s Kitchen on Broadway and won a Tony award, will star on the show. Joi Moon is set to play Deborah, the youngest daughter of Whitley and Dwayne Wayne, and attends the HBCU her parents attended.
Pride (Bel-Air, Grey’s Anatomy) is the showrunner on the original series of A Different World. Many of the previous crew members of the show are returning to join her as an executive producer alongside Allen, Reggie Rock Bythewood ( Biker Boyz, Swagger), Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King, The Old Guard), and Tom Werner (Oh Madeline, Your Daily Horoscope); Mandy Summers (Wart The Wizard, Super Dead)is also an executive producer. Allen has directed many of the original episodes and will lead the first few episodes of the new series, THR reported.
Pride made a statement to the public. “It is such an honor to be a part of bringing back this iconic show, one that I grew up on and which had a profound impact on my life”, she said. “I am proud of the work we’re doing to reimagine A Different World for beloved fans and new generations alike.”, says THR.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, A Different World was a spinoff of The Cosby Show. The main character was Denise Huxtable, played by Lisa Bonet. She had left the show after the first season, though. The show changed direction, focusing on a larger group of people, including Jasmine Guy (Harlem Nights, Dead Like Me), Kadeem Hardison (Vampire in Brooklyn, K.C. Undercover), Dawnn Lewis (Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper, The Poof Point), Darryl M. Bell (House Husbands of Hollywood, Homeboys in Outer Space), and many others. While Bill Cosby was the creator of The Cosby Show, he was not involved in the spinoff series.
