Netflix released its first trailer for the upcoming series Ginny & Georgia, a drama that explores the complicated relationship between a mother and daughter. The series stars Antonia Gentry (Candy Jar) as shy 15-year old Ginny, and Brianne Howey (The Exorcist) as her eccentric mother Georgia, via Entertainment Weekly.
Arriving in small town Massachusetts for a fresh start, Ginny and Georgia have a chummy relationship that is reminiscent of the series Gilmore Girls with pop culture references galore. Being the new kid at school is hard for Ginny, especially with a lot of the attention going to her quirky and odd ball mother Georgia. As she navigates the world of high school, Ginny struggles to have an independent life separate from her all consuming mother.
Though the trailer depicts the mother-daughter duo as the ideal American dream spewing witty one liners, there are shades of darkness lurking beneath the surface. Georgia had Ginny when she was fifteen, and the trailer hints that the things she did when she was young could come back and haunt her and her family. As kids at school and the townspeople become increasingly infatuated with Georgia, the stakes are raised as she attempts to keep her secrets at bay.
The series also stars Scott Porter (Friday Night Lights), Diesel La Torraca (Little Monsters), Jennifer Robertson (Schitt’s Creek), Felix Mallard (Happy Together), Sara Waisglass (Degrassi: Next Class), and Raymond Ablack (Narcos).
Debra J. Fisher (Alias), the series showrunner and executive producer, released a statement about the upcoming series which was picked up by Entertainment Weekly: “We wanted Ginny & Georgia to be a fun, feel-good ride about women, by women, for everyone; one that depicted a nuanced and complicated mother-daughter relationship, and layered female friendships in a way that isn’t always seen in shows.”
The ten-part series arrives in full on Netflix Wednesday, February 24. Watch the trailer for Ginny & Georgia below:
