On International Women’s Day, Disney+ released a new show to highlight the importance of women in front and behind the camera in one of their biggest franchises. According to Marvel’s official website, the new Marvel show MPower consists of four episodes that focus on empowering women and young girls through superheroines.
According to Marvel’s official website, the new show will follow the journeys of different women in the MCU from their first appearance in the Marvel comics to their jump to the big screen and beyond. The show is composed of archival footage, imaginative animation, and candid interviews that work together to show how these iconic characters and the women behind their success have had an impact on fans, especially young girls, around the world.
The four episodes will explore the journeys of different women heroes. The first episode will explore the backbone of the world’s most powerful nation, Wakanda. “The Women of Black Panther” has the participation of Danai Gurira (The Walking Dead, The Visitor) who plays Okoye, Lupita Nyung’o (12 Years a Slave, Us) who plays Nakia, Florence Kasumba (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Tatort) who plays Ayo, Letitia Wright (Aisha, Death on the Nile) who plays Shuri, and Angela Bassett (9-1-1, Gunpowder Milkshake) who plays Queen Ramonda. The episode dives into the beginning of these characters in the comics, how the actresses’ life experiences influenced their portrayal of these characters, and how the spirit of Africa and black excellence shaped everything in the movies.
The second episode will focus on the Marvels. The story of Captain Marvel, played by Brie Larson (Room, Just Mercy), is seen through the eyes of those who created the strong character. Viewers will get to see the transformation from Carol Danvers to Captain Marvel and the women who look up to her, Monica Rambeau played by Teyonah Parris (Dear White People, If Beale Street Could Talk), and Kamala Khan played by newcomer Iman Vellani. The audience will also get a glance into the teams that made it all possible both in front and behind the camera.
Episode three will focus on fan-favorite Scarlet Witch aka Wanda Maximoff, played by Elizabeth Olsen (Sorry for Your Loss, Wind River), and two women who have helped her accept her life without Vision. Agatha Harkness, played by Kathryn Hahn (Central Park, Glass Onion); Darcy Lewis, played by Kat Dennings (Dollface, Big Mouth); and the creative forces behind her will lead the audience through Wanda’s journey.
Lastly, MPower will explore the evolution of Gamora, played by Zoë Saldaña (Avatar, Star Trek), from her days as Thanos’ daughter to her days as an assassin to her becoming a part of the Guardians of the Galaxy. In the light of her new life as part of the Guardians, her misfit family, Gamora is pushed to explore her relationship with her sister Nebula, played by Karen Gillan (Doctor Who, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle).
MPower is executive produced by Victoria Alonso (Director by Night, Argentina, 1985), Mark Herzog (Dirty John, The Witnesses), Andie Beckerman (Watergate: Blueprint for a Scandal), and Zoë Saldaña (Meet Me in Paris, From Scratch), among others.
