Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson is throwing his two cents into the animated game with his latest collaboration with Lionsgate to bring an adaptation of the popular graphic novel Trill League to Quibi.
Co-creator Anthony Piper, who has written for such popular titles as Uncanny X-Men and Domino, said the concept for Trill League first started after he finished sketching a character named Trill Robin, a character he says has been with him ever since the second grade. Piper explained that it was just a matter of expanding to create an entire team of black superheroes that could be seen as different interpretations of DC Comics’ more staple characters. After their successful Kickstarter campaign managed to reach over $20,000, Piper along with Co-creator Jameel Saleem (South Park) were able to release the first printed Trill League in 2017.
The show has been described as a parody that combines superheroes and anime with hip-hop culture. The character of Trill Robin is equally focused on social media as he is with saving the day. Joining Trill Robin is Swolemayne, a Superman-type with narcissistic tendencies, as well as Blackmayne, a Batman-type more consumed with conspiracy theories and finally Wondeisha, a combination of Wonder Woman and Beyoncé. These characters, along with a handful of fan fav villains, are assumed to be among those making the cut for the new animated series.
In a recent statement, Jackson said, “I am excited to bring G-Unit Film & Television to an innovative platform like Quibi with my partners at Lionsgate and 3 Arts. Anthony Piper and Jameel Saleem have created a world we haven’t seen before in Trill League, looking forward to sharing it soon.” Jackson is acting as executive producer for the animated series.
Though details regarding the plot and voice actors for Trill League have yet to be announced, the synopsis has been released and it promises to display the re-imagined heroes taking on social injustice as well as social media, all the while keeping a keen satirical outlook on modern American society. Quibi officially launches April 6, 2020, so true Trill fans will have to wait at least until that time to see the graphic novel leap into action from page to screen.
