2026 Golden Globes Views Were Down 7% From Previous Year

According to Deadline, Nielsen shared data from the 83rd Golden Globes award show, which just aired on CBS on Sunday. The data showed a decrease in viewership, with 8.66 million viewers tuned in to watch the show live. This was a 7%  decrease from last year, which saw around 9.27M. The 2023 telecast saw an all-time low with viewership dipping to 6.3M. The Golden Globes were at 18.3M viewers in 2020.

Deadline also compared how the Golden Globes stacked up to other award shows this year and in previous years. The views this year were higher than the 2025 Emmys, but lower than the Oscars. The Emmys averaged 7.42M, whereas the Oscars averaged 19.3M viewers last year. One reason for the decline is the airtime placement. CBS telecast the Golden Globes Sunday evening, but without an NFL game lead-in. The game between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Buffalo Bills for a spot in the playoffs aired at 1 p.m., allowing a gap between the two broadcasts. This allowed some viewers to have the ability to switch the channels to see what other programs were on to watch.

The NFL season can be a blessing and a curse, Deadline explains. For a show to follow immediately after a game is a blessing, since the show will benefit from the football game viewers. However, in this case, the award show not only did not immediately follow the end of the game, but Fox and NBC were also telecasting divisional playoff games as well.

Paramount noted to Deadline that there was plenty of talk online about the Golden Globes. In fact, the online chatter was up 5% from last year. Paramount stated that there were over 43M interactions this year. The ET: Live on the Golden Globes Red Carpet pre-show averaged 3.4M viewers, according to Nielsen ratings.
