The 2026 BAFTA TV Awards last night brought with it a slew of wins for British television, as Netflix’s Adolescence made history by being the first show in ceremony to win four awards (also known as gongs). The series had already rung in a successful award season run with Golden Globes, Emmys, and Broadcasting Press Guild Awards, while also adding two gongs from last month’s BAFTA Craft Awards.
Created by Jack Thorne (Wonder, Enola Holmes) and Stephen Graham (Rocketman, Boiling Point), Adolescence explores the effect of internet radicalization and the influence of the “manosphere” on young teenagers. The series is marked by its unique cinematography and performances, in which each of its episodes was shot in one continuous take.
Adolescence took home the award for Best Limited Drama, as well as Best Supporting Actor and Actress for Owen Cooper (Wuthering Heights, Film Club) as Jamie Miller and Christine Tremarco (Little Boy Blue, Wolfe) as Jamie’s mother, Manda Miller, respectively. Notably, series creator Graham won the highly coveted gong for Best Leading Actor, which Deadline reports as his successful eighth attempt to win a BAFTA across TV and film and is his first-ever BAFTA acting prize.
Due to its remarkable awards circuit run after four Golden Globes and nine Emmys, Adolescence had been highly anticipated to continue its streak – Deadline reports that it would have been a huge upset had the show underperformed at the BAFTA TV Awards. mxdwn also reported prior on its multiple-category nominations in March, highlighting broad voter support and a strong presence in the competitive industry. Its historic four wins in a single night make it the highest awarded series ever at the main BAFTA TV Awards, ahead of esteemed double and triple winners such as Happy Valley and Killing Eve.
Other prominent TV series with multiple wins included Prime Video’s Last One Laughing and the BBC’s Celebrity Traitors. Listed by Deadline, more big winners of the night included Apple TV’s The Studio with Best International Programme and actor Steve Coogan (Greed, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief) for Best Male Comedy Performance in How Are You? It’s Alan (Partridge). For the Current Affairs award, the production team of Gaza: Doctors Under Attack – which had been controversially dropped by the BBC and picked up by Channel 4 – called out the broadcaster and for its censorship by questioning live whether or not their acceptance speech would air in the later broadcast.
Hosted by Taskmaster presenter and comedian Greg Davies (Man Down, The Cleaner) at the Royal Festival Hall in London, the 2026 BAFTA TV Awards marks the organization’s first large-scale televised event since the Film Awards incident where Tourette’s campaigner John Davidson (I Swear, Tourette’s: Teenage Tics) involuntarily yelled a racial slur at the stars of Sinners.
